China and Italy signed MoU on Geographical Indication

On July 28, 2024, a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Intellectual Property Administration of the People's Republic of China (CNIPA) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry of the Italian Republic. 

The signing took place at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and was witnessed by Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Shen Changyu, Commissioner of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), and Italian Ambassador to China Massimo Ambrosetti signed the MoU on behalf of their respective administrations.

Purpose of the MoU

  • Strengthen cooperation between China and Italy in the field of intellectual property (IP), particularly in areas relevant to agriculture, food sovereignty, and forestry.

  • Promote the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights (IPR) in agricultural products, geographical indications, and other areas of mutual interest.

  • Enhance the exchange of information and best practices, promote joint research initiatives, and foster innovation in agricultural and food sectors between the two countries.

This MoU reflects the growing collaboration between China and Italy in various sectors, including intellectual property protection and agricultural development. The agreement aligns with global trends emphasizing sustainable agriculture, food security, and protecting unique local products and traditions.

The MoU is a step forward in fostering bilateral relations between China and Italy, particularly in the domains of agriculture and intellectual property. It underscores the importance of collaboration on a global scale to address challenges related to food sovereignty, sustainable development, and the protection of unique agricultural products.
